Routes to MCIOB



There are many routes to becoming Chartered with CIOB. Whether you’re a graduate, have technical or vocational qualifications or have simply built up years of experience, you can choose the path that best suits you.

To become MCIOB chartered you need to demonstrate an engagement with the built environment, a commitment to ethical working and to promoting a culture of continual improvement.

As well as construction managers, we welcome applications from all types of construction professionals, from surveyors to conservationists, engineers to HR specialists, designers to lecturers.

Managers with industry experience or a technical qualification

If you’re a manager with at least five years’ experience and/or a technical qualification such as a BTEC, HND or HNC, the Chartered Membership Programme (CMP) could be your best route to MCIOB.

Advantages of the Chartered Membership Programme

    The CMP covers all the knowledge and skills required to effectively run a project and prepare you for middle and senior management roles, such as commercial practice, health and safety and construction technology in one year.
  • Blend of distance and classroom learning
    Your study is also supported by our online tools. You’ll complete an open-book assessment at the end of the programme, based on a real life project scenario.
  • Supported through Professional Review
    As you build up your skills throughout the year, your continuing professional development (CPD) is recorded in readiness for the Professional Review for MCIOB, which you’ll be supported through by your course provider.
  • Flexible study options
    Skills4Stem provide a range of distance and classroom-based options so that you can best fit your study around your work.

Straight to Professional Review with industry experience

If you have three or more years’ industry experience and a CIOB recognised industry specific honours degree you may be ready to go straight to the Professional Review, becoming Chartered within 12 weeks of submitting your application.The Professional Review checks that you have the right knowledge, skills and experience in three areas of competence: occupational, management and commitment to professionalism.

Skills4Stem run in-house Professional Review workshops and 1-2-1 coaching and pre-assessment to ensure you have the greatest chance of completing the professional review successfully.
